Prince Phillip has Died: What Now?

As you have probably heard, Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh died today at age 99. When we think of what we do here in the U.S. when someone passes away, we lower our flags to half-staff and go about our day, mourning in our own ways. Maybe there's a TV special, depending on the person, or maybe their memorial service is livestreamed. Other than that, there's not much else we do. But, in the UK, when a member of the royal family dies, there are operations put in place.

The name of the operation for Prince Philip is "Operation Forth Bridge," which began with the announcement of his death by Buckingham Palace. After announcements and speeches, the country enters a period of national mourning. All flags should be lowered to half-staff and all TV personnel should wear black. Prince Philip has chosen to have a quieter send-off rather than the state funeral that he is entitled to.

Although this has little to do with our normal daily lives here in the U.S., I think it is interesting to see how other places go about honoring important figures.

  1. Thank you for sharing! Mourning and death are one of the few things that are prevalent throughout every community, and it's so interesting to see how different cultures handle the process, especially for important figures. The part about TV personnel wearing all back is interesting to me! It's something that I would never think would happen in the United States, unless the TV station themselves require it.

  2. This was interesting to read! I'd never really thought about how other countries honor those who have died when they are notable figures. The UK's traditions seem a lot more formal than the US, and the tradition of all TV personnel wearing black is an interesting concept. Thanks for sharing!

  3. I think this is really interesting to learn about! I've never considered how prominent political figures in other countries are honored after their death. It's also cool to see the differences between the personalities of people based upon their preferred ways to be sent off. Thanks for sharing!

  4. As someone who is a little obsessed with The Royal Family at times, this was a very interesting to read! Honoring important figures is so unique from country to country, so I am glad you shared this! I wonder what inspired a quieter send-off for Phillip? I would love to know the reasoning behind forgoing the fanciness.
