Chapter 4 Reading Analysis

This past week we read Chapter 4 of "Social Media for Strategic Communication," which was all about finding a job in the social media industry.

For me, it was refreshing to see a textbook address the realities of working in a particular field/industry. In my experience, the textbooks I've encountered do the obvious: teach the particular material and nothing else. I also like that this book starts out its chapters with a real person's account on their history and experience in working in the industry.

I appreciate how this chapter gives an outline of the possible job placements that are available in the world of social media. Not only that, sample job descriptions for various positions at different companies is included, which I think is fantastic, it will give applicants a nice taste of what to expect from various positions.

Salary is a huge looming question that isn't always the easiest topic to talk about in the workplace, but it is incredibly important. There are three figures illustrating the average salary for three potential jobs in social media: social media manager, social media specialist and social media director. The author, Karen Freberg, also tells readers that they may need a side hustle if they're just starting out in the world of social media, which isn't usually what you'd expect to see. I commend the author for being honest about what it's truly like and what to expect in a social media career.

This chapter is a great resource for those who are planning on pursuing a career in social media, give it a glance if you're interested!

  1. It's great that such an important topic is covered in that book. It's admirable that the author relayed the truth about what working in social media looks like, at least from a corporate view. I definitely agree that those who are starting out may not find the desired income they were hoping for and might have to add an income stream to compensate for that. However, I would love to see coverage of similar positions that are not in the corporate world. Over the past few years, and especially recently with the pandemic, I've noticed younger generations are finding ways to work in the world of social media on there own. I think in the future we will continue to see a spike in entrepreneurship as young generations take on the world of service providing!
