NCAA Women's Basketball

Athlete for the Oregon Ducks, Sedona Prince (@sedonaprince_ on Twitter), shared a Tiktok video showing the state of the women's weight room in comparison to the men's. At the time, the women had a set of dumbbells, and the men had an entirely stocked weight room, filled with the equipment that they needed for a successful workout session. According to Prince's video, the NCAA said the discrepancy was due to an issue of space, not money, which was shown in the video to be a lie.

Other athletes compared the food, gear bags as well as the weight rooms in a tweet. It's obvious that the men's teams received more and better items than the women's teams.

Later, Sedona Prince shared another video showing that they were given a much nicer weight room, and it was all due to the power of social media.

I hope this instance will prevent women's teams in the future from being shortchanged. I'm so glad that these women brought attention to the issue to get it resolved.

Here is the Title IX excerpt from the NCAA's page, illustrating that these discrepancies should have never happened.  It can be found under FAQ #3 How is Title IX applied to athletics?

  1. I saw the TikTok that she made about this issue, and it just is unacceptable. The athletes are giving up so much to be able to play the game they love, just to get treated like that. There are many injustices that women are still facing in sports, and it is an issue that needs addressed sooner rather than later.

  2. I also came across the video on TikTok and felt outraged along with saddened that women are still dealing with these types of inequalities. I'm glad that change was able to come from the video, this really goes to show how social media is shaping the way the world works. Hopefully industries known for gender inequality make changes as they realize how unacceptable situations like this are.

  3. I saw the TikTok that was made and this issue needs to be solved. All of this in unacceptable and I am interested to see what the NCAA does in the future to change the injustices the women are facing in all sports. I like watching women's sports as well and it is just a shame this has to happen. Thank you for sharing.
