A Crazy Start to Dead Week

As we all know, dead week is a crazy time in most college students' lives. That was no different in my household this week.

For some background, me and my two friends have an off-campus house together, and with the days growing colder, our furnace was running all the time. Our house is quite large and takes a while to warm up and keep warm. With all of that, our last electric bill was near $300... We were all incredibly shocked since our previous bills had been less than half of that. We decided we had to act fast and plastic up our windows before we got too deep into our next bill cycle, especially since the majority of our windows are ancient and leak air like they're not even there.

My roommate Jasmyn's family came over the end of Thanksgiving break to plastic the windows, and as soon as I stepped in the house after coming back from break, I could feel a huge difference (thank goodness). Our Monday through Wednesday went as normal, but Thursday morning, we get a call from Jasmyn's mom saying that her uncle (who helped with the windows) tested positive for COVID-19. That obviously meant we were exposed, which threw a huge wrench in our plans for until we were able to be tested (we tested negative:) ).

The second and crazy part to this story brings us to early Monday morning, the eve of dead week, if you will. To preface, I will be giving a dramatic retelling of this story, since I slept through this whole ordeal. 4:30 in the morning, my roommate Cheyenne calls Jasmyn to ask her for help. At first Jasmyn thought "this is it, there's an intruder." She was right, to some degree.

Flash back to when our windows were being winterized, Jasmyn's grandpa found holes in the side of our house. Our landlords patched them up in the latter part of last week, and we thought all would be well and good. Back to Monday at 4:30 a.m.

There's a bat in Cheyenne's bedroom.

Jasmyn helps Cheyenne get out of one of her bedroom doors, and Cheyenne slams the door, all while I'm sleeping peacefully upstairs.

And that is how our little household is doing for this wonderful time of year... :)

  1. That is definitely a crazy week! I'm glad you were able to find a way to lower your electric bill, even though it came at the cost of letting a bat inside lol. Hopefully it doesn't happen again!!
